- Choose the sizes. 16, 32 and 48 px are selected by default. Add 256 px for Windows desktop icons.
- Adjust padding and corners. Optional: add a margin, round the corners or fill the background.
- Download the .ico. One file with every size you selected.
PNG to ICO: what an ICO file is
ICO is the icon format of Windows. Unlike a PNG, one .ico file holds several images of different sizes, and each program picks the one it needs: 16 px for a title bar, 32 or 48 px for shortcuts, 256 px for large desktop views. Browsers also read it as favicon.ico.
Change from PNG to ICO: which sizes to include
| Size | Where it appears |
|---|---|
| 16 px | Browser tabs, title bars, small icon views |
| 24 px | Windows taskbar at some display scales |
| 32 px | Desktop shortcuts, high-density tabs |
| 48 px | Windows Explorer medium icons |
| 64 and 128 px | Larger icon views and high-DPI displays |
| 256 px | Large and extra large icons in Windows |
How this PNG to ICO converter stores each size
Sizes up to 128 px are saved as classic bitmaps with an alpha channel, the form that every version of Windows and older icon software reads correctly. The 256 px size is stored as compressed PNG inside the ICO, which Windows supports since Vista and which keeps the file small. Transparency is kept in both cases.
Convert PNG to ICO for a favicon
For a website, an .ico with 16, 32 and 48 px is enough as favicon.ico. If you also want the Apple touch icon, the app icons and the HTML tags, use the favicon generator, which builds the whole set.
