Favicon size: which sizes and formats you need
A favicon is shown at many sizes, from a 16 pixel browser tab to a 512 pixel app icon. This guide lists the sizes that matter and how to add them.
Favicon size for website: the short list
| Size | File | Where it is used |
|---|---|---|
| 16 × 16 px | favicon.ico | Browser tabs and bookmarks |
| 32 × 32 px | favicon.ico | Tabs on high-density screens, Windows shortcuts |
| 48 × 48 px | favicon.ico | Windows and Google Search results |
| 180 × 180 px | apple-touch-icon.png | Home screen on iPhone and iPad |
| 192 × 192 px | icon-192.png | Android and installed web apps |
| 512 × 512 px | icon-512.png | Splash screens and app stores for web apps |
One favicon.ico that holds 16, 32 and 48 px, plus the three PNG files, covers browsers, phones and search engines. Our favicon generator creates all of them from one image.
Favicon size in pixels for Google Search
Google shows favicons next to search results. Its guidelines require a square favicon of at least 8 × 8 pixels and recommend one larger than 48 × 48 pixels so it looks good on different surfaces (Google Search Central). A favicon.ico with a 48 px image, or a linked PNG of 192 px, meets that recommendation.
Favicon formats: ICO, PNG and SVG
- ICO holds several sizes in one file and is what browsers request at
/favicon.icowhen no icon is declared. Keep one for compatibility. - PNG is used for the Apple touch icon and the app icons listed in the web manifest.
- SVG works as a favicon in modern browsers and stays sharp at every size. Add it as an extra icon, not as the only one.
To turn an existing PNG into an .ico with the sizes you choose, use the PNG to ICO converter.
How to add favicons in HTML
Upload the files to the root of your site and add these tags inside the <head>:
<link rel="icon" href="/favicon.ico" sizes="32x32">
<link rel="icon" href="/icon.svg" type="image/svg+xml">
<link rel="apple-touch-icon" href="/apple-touch-icon.png">
<link rel="manifest" href="/manifest.webmanifest">The manifest lists the 192 and 512 px icons. Leave out the SVG line if you do not have an SVG version.
WordPress, Shopify and Squarespace favicon size
Site builders ask for one image and create the sizes themselves. WordPress calls it the Site Icon and asks for a square image of at least 512 × 512 pixels. Shopify and Squarespace also take a square image in their brand or design settings. Upload a large square PNG and let the platform resize it; check the result in a browser tab afterwards.
