How to turn a JPG into an SVG

  3. Clean up the result. Lower the detail to remove JPEG noise and specks. Reduce the colors if the image has gradients.

JPG into SVG: dealing with compression noise

JPEG compression adds faint blocks and halos around edges that are invisible at normal size but show up when you trace the image. A white background in a JPG is often not one white but dozens of near-white shades. The tracer treats each of them as a separate area unless you merge them.

Two settings fix most of it. Lower Detail ignores small specks, and fewer Colors groups similar shades into one shape. Start from the defaults and move one slider at a time while you watch the preview.

Convert JPEG to SVG for logos and scans

The best sources are a logo saved as JPG, a scanned drawing, a signature photographed on white paper or a hand-lettered design. For scans and signatures, black and white mode gives one clean shape per stroke, ready for cutting machines or for placing on any background.

If the JPG is small, the outlines will follow its pixels. Use the largest version of the image you have: more pixels give the tracer more information about where each edge is.

JPG to SVG limits: backgrounds and photos

A JPG has no transparency, so the background is traced as one more shape. In color mode you can delete it afterwards in any vector editor, or switch to black and white to keep only the dark parts. Photos convert into a posterized look rather than a photographic one; that is how vectors work, not a limit of this tool.
